Xiaoying Lian comes from the Shenzhen–Greater Bay Area in China and works across culture, communication, and international collaboration. She studied Journalism at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and recently completed a Master’s degree in International and European Cultural Engineering in France.

Her practice brings together media, cultural research, and cross-sector collaboration, shaped by experiences across cultural institutions, creative industries, and international projects. With a background spanning journalism,culturally-driven media practice, and place-based research, she is particularly interested in how global and local perspectives intersect to create new possibilities for cross-disciplinary dialogue, cultural storytelling, and collaborative engagement. Through interdisciplinary and experimental cultural initiatives developed across different contexts, she continues to reflect on more flexible and participatory approaches to cultural exchange, public engagement, and long-term social impact.

Here is a list of 3 questions she seeks to unpack within the Beyond Lab:

  • What helps sustain human sensitivity, reflection and collective imagination in increasingly technological societies?
  • How can local experiences resonate across different realities, communities and possible futures?
  • What kinds of collaborative practices allow us to respond more meaningfully to uncertainty and transformation?
